Our Final Idea

The  Bike is Right

Our group decided to create a game show to inform the public of the benefits biking has to offer. The user will spin a bike wheel which will give them a number that corresponds to a question they will have to answer. If they get three correct answers, they'll win a great prize. The space will be defined by a back drop with info-graphics flanking both sides.

IDEA

LOCATION: SFSU Quad

1.Inspiration for this theme comes from the idea that commuters have a large impact on the environment, and we have the ability to change that.
“According to a study from November in Environmental Health Perspectives, if 30 million urban and suburban midwesterners replaced half of their short car trips with cycling during the warmest six months of the year, they “could save approximately four trillion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, 1,100 lives and $7 billion in mortality and health care costs for the region every year.” (Huffington Post)
Influences include other interactive Park(ing) Day installations, carnival games, informational exhibits, and The Price is Right.

Theme: Sustainable, eco-friendly commuting and how it benefits its users directly

2. The Bike is Right Park(ing) Day installation will provide visitors with an interactive lesson on why commuting by bicycle is better for you, your wallet, and your planet. Visitors will be shown how biking is more cost efficient for the commuter than the more common modes of transportation, such as bus or car. Visitors will be shown the amount of pollution and waste that is created by the current amount of gas powered vehicles on the road. They will also be given information on where and how to get a bike of their own, and tips on how to make the switch to biking easier.

3. The Quad is a great area to promote the idea of increasing the amount of green space because it displays open grass which gives people a sense of openness.

ACTIVITY

4.  Our activity, The Bike is Right, is a game show type of informational activity, that allows contestants to compete for a prize, while learning about why they should switch to biking through a series of trivia, price comparisons, etc. Contestants will spin a bike wheel to determine which numbered question they will be answering. If they answer a certain amount correctly, they win a prize!
5. Type of environment: Interactive/Informational/Social

6. Our game show activity, consisting of contestants answering a selection of questions about bikes, commuting, time and energy efficiency, and eco-friendly habits will be the main attraction.

7. Our installation will have large signage, music, prizes, and a fun, activity-based environment to draw people in.

The space will include infographics, showing visitors things like the average commuters carbon footprint, the average time it takes to commute by bus compared to by bike, and what effect a large amount of people switching to biking could have on the environment. The setup will be fun, inviting, and colorful, to show students that informational exhibits don’t have to be boring. The space will provide opportunities for sharing on social media, and incentives such as a free cup of coffee for participating in the game.

FORM/SHAPE
8. The space is defined as a semi-circle, as to draw people into a defined space, but not be closed off to any passerby that may want to see the exhibit from afar.

9. The space will be unified through an overall color scheme and bike images/parts.

APPEAL/ATTRACTION

10. This space is going to be visually appealing by the vibrant colors and interesting graphics made by our group. Alongside that the bicycles there will make users interested to what is going on at the time. Giving the information about bicycles will hopefully  inspire people to start using bicycles as a mode of transportation.
11.  The environment is meant to be upbeat, fun, and informative. It’s also meant to bring people together through activity.

MATERIALS
12.  What are the Primary Materials that you will use to create and/or simulate your space design and/or environmental experience? (remember materials need to be natural; recycled; re-used; and/or upcycled materials)

  1. Very well executed project from the initial concept Branding, on thru the Charrette, the Material/Asset sourcing, Bike Barn affiliation, site installation and User Experience. Very well conceived retro-70's Game Show Graphics scheme that was well executed in both your Poster and Process Book layout applications. It would have been GREAT to have seen you provide these capstone culminating outcomes, along with your installation images to your Project Journal BLOG
